Jack WalkerâChapter 4
Walking under the canopy high overhead, patches of blue showing between the boughs, my mind is filled with thoughts of where Iâve found myself. The experiences of the other world where I met Mike and Trip have shown that there isnât any neon sign pointing to the obvious. It was some convoluted time thing Trip had going, and there was no way Iâd have found a way out on my own. That very thought is depressing, as I have no idea what the hell is going on here.
First, there is the difference in terrain between where I fell into this place and in the town. Iâm no rocket scientist, but itâs apparent some time or space distortion is taking place. And then there was waking up in a future where the town had been abandoned some time ago and night runners ruled. Now, perhaps it wasnât so much a future of that particular time, but rather an alternate path. It could be that variances of alternate realities rolled through the area, or I was watching a past, present, and future of this particular timeline.
None of it makes much difference because I wouldnât know what to do with the information anyway. It doesnât really help at all other than to keep me on my toes and try to be ready for anything. But, how do you go about readying yourself for abrupt switches in reality? Iâm really beginning to wonder if I havenât gone clinically insane in my real world; that the blood from the night runners didnât have some side effect of a massive hallucination. I could actually be lying on my cot, having been carried there after slumping over at the table, uncontrollably drooling on my pillow.
The fact that Iâve felt pain and shed blood lends a certain credence to this all being real. Iâve had some pretty lucid dreams before, but never quite like this. Iâve also had experiences of being outside my body, and this is different. In the dreams, while I had control over what I was doing to an extent, it wasnât as detailed. I bend down to pick up a dead pine needle just to demonstrate to myself the ability to control my actions. In the out of body experiences, I would turn on light switches or electronics only to have them not work. Plus, the feeling is entirely different.
But, what I have is what I have, regardless if itâs real or not. After all, I really donât have much of a choice and might as well see this ride to its conclusion.
Another aspect is the fact that Lynn and a semblance of my kiddos are here, which adds an additional facet. In the other world, I found evidence of an alternate self that quite possibly had a hand in what happened. And the kids were there as well, so itâs likely there was an alternate Lynn too. But, I found no evidence of her, though that might just have been because the population had been decimatedâabsence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
